Tonight Floripa resident and founding father Ross Clarke takes to the decks — Creative Director by day and resident DJ by night, Ross Clarke brings his unique originality and flair to Floripa, located in East London’s Shoreditch. Combining his distinctive music credentials with twenty years of international DJing experience, Ross produces the eclectic series of musical events and performances at the Brazilian party haven.

Ross is responsible for launching some of the UK’s most recognised music events. He is co-founder of the established musical festival Lovebox, London’s twenty-first century cabaret club night ‘The Orgasmatron’ with Guy Chambers and Manchester’s finest hip hop label and club night ‘Fat City’. He has also worked with many of the world’s top DJs including Groove Armada, DJ Harvey, Massive Attack, Mr Scruff and DJ Marky.

Ross’s creative talent extends beyond music into journalism and filmmaking. Ross has written for a selection of London and music publications, including The Face and the eponymous Shoreditch Twat. As a filmmaker he set up his own production company Keep The Car Running in Los Angeles, and has directed the award-winning documentary ‘Skid Row’ and short ‘Some Place Safe’ starring Mark Strong. His feature ‘Dermaphoria’ with Ron Perlman (Drive, Hell Boy) and Alice Braga (City of God, I Am Legend) shoots this Autumn.

Floripa is the perfect place for dinner, drinks and dancing at the weekend. Book a table, sample our petiscos and carne (including the incredible Picanha Steak) with some fine Brazilian wines, then move onto cocktails at the bar and eventually the dancefloor. Why move around from place to place when you can be in the warm all evening and late into the night…

Wah Wah presents Scrimshire performing tracks from his critically acclaimed album “The Hollow” (Album of the Week, Gilles Peterson, BBC 6Music, May 2012) with support from new blues troubadour Brett McLaughlan.

Scrimshire
It’s been a long journey for this young producer and mutli-instrumentalist, ever since his grandad introduced him to an Errol Garner record when he was 14. Scrimshire’s sound is steeped in jazz, soul and funk, but with a nod to contemporary electronic sounds, and with strong popular song writing sensibilities.

His latest opus, “The Hollow”, has been received with huge enthusiasm, making it as Gilles Peterson’s Album of the Week in May this year, and causing the legendary tastemaker to declare it to be a “contender for album of the year and possibly one of the best album’s Wah Wah 45s has put out!”

Scrimshire’s show kicks off a live tour that’ll see him play in Birmingham, Leeds, the Kelburn Garden Party in Scotland, and finally at the Soundwave Festival in Croatia!

Brett McLaughlan
Since the age of 11, when Brett McLaughlan first picked up a guitar little did he know that by the time he turned 18 he would be hooked.

Coming from East London, witnessing the burgeoning Grime scene burst out of his neighbourhood, his personal playlist was dominated by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Santana and Albert king . He is a wise old soul masked in the body of a young man, heard only through his gruff throaty vocal pipes.

Plus Wah Wah 45s own DJs Dom Servini, DJ Konvex & Bopperson spinning their unique blend of afro, latin, house, rock & roll, jazz, soul and Brazilian rhythms!

Corazón returns fresh and dressed to impress with a very special guest! Residents Nik Weston and Rob Coley present their monthly block-party of Brazilian beats, Latin jazz, Afrobeat and other tropical disco treats with a true musical pioneer, the legend that is DJ Sabo flying in from LA for the only UK stop on his European Tour 2012.

Special guest:

DJ Sabo (Sol*Selectas, Moombahton Massive)
Mention the name Sabo to anyone familiar with the tropical end of EDM and the response will be unanimous: deep, unquestioning respect, tinged with a healthy measure of awe. For the past 15 years, the globetrotting DJ and producer, now based in Los Angeles after moving from his native New York, has set the benchmark for his peers, thanks to his unmistakable signature style: ‘Funky music to make you feel good’, as he describes it – an irresistible, resonant, Balearic fusion that draws upon house, tropical bass, latin, Brazilian, afrobeat, disco, reggae, cumbia, dub, Miami bass, hip hop, funk and soul. In a glowsticks era when the word ‘uplifting’ has lost much of its meaning, Sabo’s productions, many released via his own Sol*Selectas label, are every bit uplifting as they are finely crafted and timeless. It’s led him to performing alongside the likes of Sting, Erykah Badu, Chromeo, Brazilian Girls, and Aloe Blacc, while publications such as Rolling Stone, Spin, Mixmag and The Fader, through to tastemaker sites like XLR8R, Generation Bass and Highsnobiety have all queued up to acknowledge his talents.

It has also led him to become a pivotal part of the fast-growing moombahton scene, with the sound’s creator, Dave Nada, openly crediting Sabo’s experiments with traditional latin cumbia and modern beats for Bersa Discos as a key influence on his Dutch house-reggaeton derived sound. Not only was he a major factor in its inception, Sabo remains one of the biggest influences on its ascent. He’s responsible behind many of the genre’s key tracks, he’s a driving force behind the already legendary Moombahton Massive parties at Washington DC’s U Street Music Hall and LA’s Vibrate monthly, and as the compiler of the seminal Moombahton Massive EPs, has set the tone for a legion of producers.

Sabo’s achievements don’t even stop there: in 2006 he was named in URB’s Next 100, while he has since become a staple on the New York gallery circuit, performing at the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim and the Natural History Museum. High-profile clients such as Puma, Gucci, The Huffington Post and Bloomingdales have also sought Sabo’s brand of high-end beats, while influential record labels such as Diplo’s Mad Decent and MAN Recordings out of Berlin have commissioned him to remix their artists. He’s also had great success as a recording artist for a number of other respected labels, including his own, Sol*Selectas, Nickodemus’ Wonderwheel Recordings, nu-cumbia label Bersa Discos and on Irma Records with partner Zeb. In that time he’s remixed and collaborated with such artists as Dennis Ferrer, Gregor Salto, Nadastrom, Amadou & Miriam, Balkan Beat Box and Nickodemus.

As a DJ his career has included residencies at Turntables on the Hudson, Cielo, Submercer, and Bembe, a two-year stint hosting a monthly Global Beats radio show on New York’s 91.5 FM, and a long-term spell managing NYC’s legendary record store, Turntable Lab. Add all this up and you begin to see why Sabo is held in awe by everyone who’s heard him in action.

“Nobody has that groove like Sabo does – he’s the funkiest dude on the planet. He just has a natural funk that DJs and producers strive for their entire careers.” Dave Nada, moombahton originator

Plus residents:

Nik Weston (Mukatsuku Records)
Since starting his first club night back in 1995, Nik Weston has held numerous residencies across London town and has played in over 30 countries around the world. He now be found running the Mukatsuku Records imprint and often produces afro disco related edits as GUYNAMUKAT. Over the last 12 years he has put out over 60 vinyl releases on Japanese, UK and European labels often with Latin, Brazilian and African influences.

Rob Coley (Soul-Identity Music)
DJ and promoter Rob Coley has been collecting records and DJing for over 15 years and since a move brought him to the capital in September 2001, he hasn’t looked back, promoting a number of events under the Soul-Identity Music banner in London Town. Rob’s passion for music spans hip-hop, soul, underground house, jazz and Afro Latin rhythms.

www.facebook.com/corazonlondon & www.solselectas.com & www.facebook.com/sabofanpage

Jam Tart is an open mic night and jam session with a difference! Bringing together some of London’s most exciting new talent in the form of singers, poets, rappers, story tellers, musicians, dancers and even comedians.

This is not your average open mic as the emphasis is on quality. Jam Tart is an opportunity for talented performers to play with highly experienced musicians. The Jam Tart Houseband is proudly put together from the finest session musicians the UK has to offer. After touring and supporting the biggest artists from around the UK, Jam Tart is where they come to have fun, meet and play with new and up-and-coming artists.

Come perform with the band or feel free to bring your own musicians. Play whatever you like; covers are fine but original material or jammin’ is especially encouraged.

Rules:
1) Get your name on the list between 9pm and 10pm to be in with a chance of performing.
2) No time for rehearsals with the band! This is seat-of-the-pants performance!
3) The host will read out names from the list and invite people to the stage. Once on stage, you get about 30 seconds to have a quick chat with the band and decide what you’d like to perform.
4) Unfortunately there are often many more names on the list than there is time for everyone to perform. You may be unlucky and not get on stage, do try again next time! Either way there’ll be plenty to keep you entertained and inspired.

So whether you want to perform or just want to sit back with a beer or a cocktail and enjoy the freshest and best that London has to offer make sure you grab yourself a tasty slice of Jam Tart!

Come and join The Home Spun Show for its next live excursion at Floripa in Shoreditch. Judging from the reception we had for The Bohemianauts last time they played for us, this gig will be absolutely brilliant! The Bohemianauts are a band who hark back to the days of Vaudeville with their idiosyncratic mix of polkas, tangos and mad drinking songs. They are a band you’d love to happen across at 3am in a dark festival tent as they pour out another round of vicious, vicious, vodka.

Like a gypsy Amos Milburn this brilliant accordion-led band drown their sorrows in demi-monde decadance and cabaret carnavalism with Gypsy Swing songs about David Icke, the end of the world and unrequited dread. Frontman Tom Baker is a regular solo performer on the burgeoning London cabaret scene, while the rest of the band are experienced musicians with experience of everything from Latin guitar to Experimental Jazz, via Electronica and Pop. Together they create an engaging and uplifting sound, with a wry lyrical sensibility. Blending their own ‘new standards’ with a selection of unlikely and sometimes unfamiliar covers, they beguile and entertain in a way that is truly their own.
